Medical Section

The Medical Section consists of lay health care workers providing education and services to empower clients to manage their health.

The Berkeley Free Clinic Medical Section provides acute primary care for the following concerns:

  • STI/HIV testing

  • Urinary Tract Infections

  • Pregnancy testing

  • Some skin rashes and concerns

  • Minor wounds and burns

  • Tuberculosis testing

  • Upper and Lower respiratory concerns

  • Ear concerns

  • Tetanus and flu vaccinations

At this time the medical section is offering limited services due to the current pandemic. These services include:

  • In-person Routine STI screens and HIV testing

All volunteers receive extensive training from the Medical Section to cover the range of concerns listed above.  The training takes place every Saturday and Sunday over a six month time period.  Training consists of learning about different disease conditions and clinical skills, as well as exploring social determinants of health.

The Medical Section requires a commitment of 1.5 years after a volunteer’s training is complete.

Medical Professionals Looking to Volunteer

The Medical Section operates with a network of “Shift Professionals” who volunteer on-shift or are contacted over the phone for consultation for the range of health concerns seen by the Medical Section.  If you are a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant interested in volunteering as a shift professional, please email info@berkeleyfreeclinic.org for more information. Thank you!
